Beijing Undergorund Film Series: Ox Hide by Liu Jiayin
Thu, Jun 8
7 pm and 9 pm
$8 regular, $5 students, seniors and teachers, $5 YBCA members
Beneath mainstream cinema exists an exploding independent digital =
video scene in urban Beijing. This work is not generally publicly =
distributed or exhibited in its home country. Fiercely independent, =
the work provides a unique, unofficial window to the study and =
understanding of contemporary China.

"The tension between 'reality' and artifice pushes the film into =
darker and more troubling psychological areas than cin=E9ma-v=E9rit=E9 has =
ever reached." -Tony Rayns, London Film Festival
Already widely recognized as one of the most innovative Chinese films =
in years, Ox Hide is a tour-de-force by young director Liu Jiayin. =
Shot entirely in her family's tiny apartment, Liu and her parents =
play themselves. The film, however, is entirely scripted and designed =
with unflinching rigor. Liu stages 23 static shots, her DV camera =
creating a claustrophobic, closed universe. The multiple award- =
winning work shows how formal experimentation can coexist with =
engrossing human drama and powerful emotion.
