The acclaimed San Francisco Chamber Orchestra returns to the San =
Francisco International Arts Festival with an exciting program of =
music by leading Latin American composers. Percussionists are the =
stars of this concert; marimbas, timpani, and a wide variety of =
instruments will quicken your pulse and keep your feet tapping. =
Music by Gabriela Ortiz, Tania Le=F3n, and Silvestre Revueltas.
Gabriela Ortiz was born in Mexico City, where she studied composition =
with Mario Lavista at the National Conservatory of Music, and =
Federico Ibarra at the National University of Mexico. Ms. Ortiz's =
1995 work, Altar de Ne=F3n, was written originally for the percussion =
quartet Tambuco and Camerata de las Am=E9ricas (a Mexico City-based =
chamber orchestra) and is a seminal work in Ms. Ortiz's catalogue. =
While the work was composed in 1995 and Ms. Ortiz has gone on to have =
successful collaborations with American music institutions, Altar de =
Ne=F3n has never been performed in the U.S. SFCO's performance will be =
the US premiere of this work.
Tania Le=F3n, born in Cuba, is a vital personality on today's music =
scene and is highly regarded as a composer and conductor recognized =
for her accomplishments as an educator and advisor to arts =
organizations. Ms. Le=F3n is currently featured on Univision's =
"Orgullo Hispano" series, which celebrates living American Latinos. =
Commissioned by the U.S.-Mexico Fund for Culture in 1994, Tania =
Le=F3n's sin normas ajenas ("without another's norms") finds common =
ground between an astringent atonal style, complete with dense =
counterpoint and wildly zigzagging melodic lines, and Caribbean =
rhythms. SFCO's performance will mark the Bay Area premiere of this =
work.
Silvestre Revueltas (1899-1940) was a Mexican violinist, conductor, =
and composer who helped to create an original Mexican music based on =
indigenous folk styles. Revueltas was a highly original musician =
whose career was cut tragically short by, in Simon Wright's words, =
his own "hard-living, self-destructive character." Sensemaya =
(chamber orchestra version) is his most celebrated and often- =
performed work, based on the Afro-Cuban poet Nicolas Guillen's =
namesake poem, subtitled "Chant to Kill a Snake." The complex and =
dramatic Homenaje a Federico Garc=EDa Lorca was composed as a tribute =
to the memory of the murdered Spanish poet.
The San Francisco Chamber Orchestra is one of the premiere ensembles =
on today's musical scene. The San Francisco Chamber Orchestra was =
founded by conductor Adrian Sunshine in 1953, and led by Edgar Braun =
for more than forty years until his retirement in 2002. In January =
2002, Maestro Benjamin Simon became SFCO's new Music Director. =
Maestro Simon ushered in a new era of musical excellence with dynamic =
programming choices, and implemented the innovative admission-free =
policy to make classical music accessible to everyone. To learn more =
