The Maiz Project

Mon, May 22
7 PM

$10 .00 to $25.00

EARPLAY commissioned a new work by Guillermo Galindo, Post-colonial
Discontinuum for the entire ensemble. Mr Galindo will be the
featured guest artist performing on the maiz, an instrument of his
own creation from discarded technology artifacts such as computer
parts. A Meet the Composer Commissioning Music/USA Commission
supports Mr. Galindo's work. Mary Chun conducts the large ensemble
work and comments "Driven by deep tradition coupled with a striking
21st century technical aesthetic, Guillermo's music is both primitive
and fantastical and we were eager to have a work written for
Earplay. This is the second collaboration between Ms. Chun and Mr.
Galindo. An American composer (Mexican by birth) now living and
working in California, Mr. Galindo visualizes Post-colonial
Discontinuum combining contemporary technology and music techniques
with elements of Mesoamerican spirituality and fragments of Mexican
folkloric and traditional music. The composer will create an
environment in which the technical mastery of EARPLAY's musicians
will complement-and oppose-the sonic world of his created instrument,
the MAIZ
Other composers included in the program are:
Caspar Johannes Walter (Germany)
Yu-hui Chang
Pablo Ortiz and
Fredrik Fahlman (Sweden),
