Book Signing with Camille Rose Garcia
Fri, May 12
5:00 pm -6:00 pm
free
Camille Rose Garcia's only book signing in Northern California will
be in San Francisco at Therapy, May 12th. Fans will have a rare
opportunity to meet the artist in person and have her sign copies of
her new book, The Saddest Place on Earth.
The documentary film The Treasures of Long Gone John, which features
Camille's artwork, will show at the Roxie theater immediately
following the signing.
Los Angeles artist Camille Rose Garcia is quickly gaining
international interest for her exceptionally unique work. Creating
paintings using layers of drippy paint, ink, torn papers, black
glitter, and varnishes, Camille creates a world of candy and flesh-
colored gloss mixed with decay and ruin. She then populates this
world with big-eyed animals damaged from years of environmental
pollution, sinister centipede-like villains, and Gothy little flapper
girls that seem to recall both the early era of cartoon characters
and the Victorian ensembles of Edward Gorey.
In this world, it's often unclear who is bad and who is good, and
Camille uses this self-created world to make statements on mass
consumer culture, environmental ruin, and the retreat to fantasy when
the world becomes too much to bear, significant in our post 9/11
culture. Occasionally referred to as
"comic," Camille's work transcends the merely narrative and becomes
deeply meaningful, dark, and exhilarating to look at.
Camille's book, The Saddest Place On Earth, is hardbound, 11" x 11",
full color, with gatefolds and a special textured cover.
Camille Rose Garcia draws inspiration for her creepy dystopias from
her upbringing in the generic suburbs of Orange County. Her
disenchantment with society brought her into a world of subversive
art and music. Garcia's work has been featured in Juxtapoz, Paper,
Flaunt, and Blab.
