Writer and Performance Artist Karen Finley Gives Dramatized Reading
from George and Martha

SFAI alumna Karen Finley has, since the 1980s, explored America's
curdled psyche in passionate, visceral, and humorous staged solo
performances, plays, installations, writings, and semi-regular
appearances on Bill Maher's network debate show, Politically
Incorrect. Finley's work has had the distinction of being discussed
in the US Supreme Court when, in 1990, she was one of four artists to
have an NEA grant revoked. At SFAI, Finley will present a dramatized
reading from her just-published satire, George and Martha, which
imagines a steamy romance between George W. Bush and Martha Stewart,
with nods to the similarly named dysfunctional duo in Edward Albee's
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf-not to mention the United State's
founding father and wife. Finley's other books include Shock
Treatment, A Different Kind of Intimacy, Enough Is Enough, and Living
It Up. She teaches Art and Public Policy at Tisch School of the Arts,
New York University. A book signing will follow the presentation.
