The Problems With Books: Comedy Variety Show at the Dark Room

The Problems group consists of Joe Donohoe, (author of To Be Santa
You Have to Be Tested), Harmon Leon (author of Republican Like Me and
The Harmon Chronicles), Mike Spiegelman (founder of the variety show
Speigelmania! and former Fresh Robots member), and Bucky Sinister
(author of Whiskey and Robots).

San Francisco's only sketch tragedy group, The Problems, takes a look
at the problems of books through time, from the writing of the Old
Testament to recent literary hoaxes. Through sketches, monologues,
spoken word, and verbal miming, they examine the everyday trouble of
literature.

"The current state of literature is so sad, it's funny," says group
member Bucky Sinister. "That's why it's perfect for a group like us
to satirize. Books are either needlessly revered as sacred tomes or
are little more than well packaged marketing copy. There's little
left in the middle anymore. Every book seems to be a manifesto, an
expose, or a how-to fluff book. They're all either overwritten or
insulting to the literate.

"Have you ever had friends you're terrified to introduce to each
other? Not because they won't get along, but because they're very
powerful evil geniuses who might hatch and execute plans for world
domination? imagine there are [four] of them, all viciously talented
writer-men, all funny, most of them handsome. OK, some of them
handsome. If such a sextet were allowed to get together, one result
might be a comedy lineup so sly and dark it would make Tina Fey pee
her mom jeans. Frighteningly, such a commingling has come to pass."-
