Screenings of "A.K.A. Tommy Chong" documentary
Thu, Apr 27
7:30 and 9:30 p.m. start times
$9
In 2003, under an obscure provision of the USA "PATRIOT" ACT, the
stoner comedy icon Tommy Chong (of Cheech and Chong fame), was
arrested and charged with manufacturing hand-made glass pipes (A/K/A
"bongs").
Josh Gilbert's hilarious yet tragic documentary follows this legal
case, exposing the absurdity of U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft's
revived War on Drug Paraphernalia that somehow made a connection
between smoking dope and supporting Al Qaeda.
Under "Operation Pipe Dreams," 55 individuals were indicted on
federal charges. Chong was the big celebrity caught in the sting and
the only victim sent to prison, even though Tommy had merely allowed
his name and likeness to be used to promote the business founded and
managed by his son, Paris.
Winner of the Jury Prize for Best Documentary Feature at the Aspen
Film Festival, "A/K/A Tommy Chong" exposes the hypocrisy of the Bush
administration's right wing assault on civil liberties and freedom of
speech. It seems that Tommy Chong was sentenced to serve nine months
in federal prison not for smoking dope or manufacturing pipes, but
for making comedy films about such activities 20 years ago.
**Special Guest Appearances**
