Local artists raises funds for relief effort
aiding Pakistan earthquake victims.
Laure Cuvillier a local visual artist, is presenting "To Be
Assembled", a
show of her recent works, at designer's shop Houseofhengst.
Cuvillier will donate a percent of the sales of the show to the
relief for
the earthquake that occurred last October in Pakistan. "People still do
not have enough warm clothes over there", she says, "I read last fall
that
thousands of homeless survivors would die of cold during winter
months and
it deeply disturbed me."
Showing in an alternative venue, such as a store, is a great opportunity
for Cuvillier not only to exhibit her new works in busy Mission
neighborhood, but also to do something to help with Pakistan relief."
The
store does not take commission of the work, as an art gallery would
normally do, which allows a percentage of the sales to instead go to
humanitarian associations.
Cuvillier concludes, "I like to give Assemblage a larger meaning, where
art and fashion can meet with Relief Effort. I like to think that we
can
enrich our life with style and beauty while keeping in mind those in
needs
for survival basics, such as food, shelter and clothes."
Cuvillier's show is specifically designed for the boutique. She
explains, "I thought paper dolls and paper clothes imagery would be
perfect for the shop. The dolls are almost naked on the wall, ready to
wear everything in the shop. The viewer is engaged to create and
imagine its
outfit"
Cuvillier implemented her hand-painted paper clothes with various
clothes
adornment she collected during her last trip in Paris. "I often use my
art as a travel log, and I wanted to bring a touch of Parisian
fashion to
my art. My flat paper dolls have real and fancy accessories! The
show is
a subtle assemblage of contrasting elements".
Cuvillier also sees multiple meanings in her dolls: "they are cute and
playful", she says, "at the same time they address deeper issues
regarding
Identity: parts of our personalities are often interchangeable, in the
same manner clothes are, and we often choose which one to wear on
different occasions."
Reception will be Thursday April 27th, at 7-9.30 pm. House of Hengst is
at 924 Valencia street (between 20th and 21st). San Francisco.
