City Lights & The Onion Present:
In Search of The Most Special Person Ever
(A Contest as Exciting as "American Idol," as Revealing as Catholic
Confession)
Thursday, May 11, 2006, 7:00 pm
at City Lights Bookstore
261 Columbus Ave. | San Francisco, CA
Join City Lights and the Onion in celebrating the release of Hello
I'm Special: How Individuality Became the New Conformity, a new book
by Hal Niedzviecki, an ironic look at the growing culture of
conformity in the United States. Dubbed the "guru of independent/
alternative action" by the Toronto Star, Hal presents a smart, witty,
impassioned argument that exposes the paradox of individualism - in a
culture that advocates the pursuit and celebration of each person's
inherent "specialness," where the pop myth of everyone's-a-star is
all-pervasive, individualism and rebellion have become the most
conformist of behaviors.
Come hear Hal discuss the phenomenon of individuality, as the new
conformity, then take the contest. Contestants will
have five minutes to prove just how amazing, exceptional and special
they are. One lucky winner will be chosen to have a (virtual) lunch
with Hal Niedzviecki and his publisher at City Lights, Elaine
Katzenberger to talk about . . . YOU! This will be an opportunity to
pitch your book idea (c'mon, you know you have one!) and try to
convince City Lights to unlock the gates to the promised land of fame!
But be warned: you will face a panel of discriminating judges
including author Beth Lisick, Lisa Jervis of Bitch Magazine, Suzanne
Kleid, Eli Horowitz from McSweeney's and Andrew Leland from The
Believer.
