From Inside Eyes: The Ghana Youth Photo Project by Jamie Lloyd

The Rayko Photo Center and SF Camerawork's youth mentoring program, =
First Exposures, present From Inside Eyes: The Ghana Youth Project. =
In October 2005 SF Camerawork and First Exposures sponsored mentor =
Jamie Lloyd's trip to West Africa to bring a photography program to =
10 youths in Ghana's capital city of Accra. The children not only =
learned a new skill but were also given the opportunity to visually =
represent their country, culture, and religion through photographic =
images.
Lloyd met with her students three times a week and assigned =
photography projects including: animals, family, sports, self- =
portraiture, market days, and festivals. Field trips included a visit =
to an Internet caf=E9 to view photography online and a field trip to =
the Daily Graphic newspaper, the largest newspaper in Ghana. At the =
end of the two-month class the students were invited to participate =
in a photo contest held by the Junior Art Club, a local non-profit =
youth arts organization, where four of the students were awarded top =
honors.
This exhibition of more than 100 photographs features a selection of =
work by Jamie Llyod and by the students in Ghana which is the =
culmination of more than 200 rolls of film shot.

The RayKo Photo Center is a unique artist-run photographic arts =
center that has been serving the Bay Area photographic community =
since 1990. The RayKo facility located at 428 Third Street in the =
city's Museum District offers 12,000 square feet of work space =
dedicated to the creation, presentation, and appreciation of =
contemporary photography. Over the years the RayKo Photo Center =
developed a reputation as a nexus for Bay Area artists and =
photographers to produce their work and exchange ideas in a =
stimulating environment.
In addition to exhibitions in the gallery, the flat files of the =
Photographer's Marketplace features a rotating selection works by Bay =
Area artists. The goal of the Photographer's Marketplace is to =
support the work of Bay Area artists, and encourage the collecting of =
art by making it more accessible and affordable. RayKo is also host =
site of the Bay area's first and only Art*O*Mat vending machine where =
original works of art can be purchased for the cost of a $5 token.
