Robert Brady: Sculpture-- Opening Event

During the 1970s and 1980s, Bay Area artist Robert Brady established
himself among the nation's most original ceramic sculptors. The
Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, California, presented a survey
exhibition of the artist's ceramic sculpture in 1989. It was in this
year that Brady made a transition from ceramic sculpture to carved
wood figures, a creative direction representing the primary focus for
the exhibition. The exhibition is introduced with a formative, large-
scale, ceramic sculpture owned by the di Rosa Preserve, Napa,
California. Thirty one sculptures are featured, including three
sculptures in bronze and a mixed media lithograph. They reveal
Brady's highly individual and diverse expression, as well as the ease
with which the artist has moved between media. The exhibition has
been culled from a larger presentation at the Palo Alto Art Center.
Its 88-page, full-color catalogue, features a curatorial essay by
Signe Mayfield, Palo Alto Art Center, that traces the evolution of
his sculpture in wood. In addition, the catalogue features a guest
essay by the sculptor, art critic, and curator, Maria Porges.

Braunstein/Quay Gallery in San Francisco, California, has arranged
the independent tour of selected works from the exhibition to the di
Rosa Preserve, Napa, California; Fresno Art Museum, Fresno,
California; American University at Katzen Center, Washington, D.C.;
and Fuller Craft Museum, Brockton, Massachusetts.

The exhibition and catalogue ROBERT BRADY: SCULPTURE, 1989-2005, are
supported by the Division of Arts and Culture, City of Palo Alto and
