Golden Gate Sacred Harp Singing
Sat, Apr 22
9:00am-3:00 pm
free, donations accepted
Traditional all-day shape note singing and potluck "dinner on the
grounds." Experience the unique and powerful early American a
cappella folk hymns of The Sacred Harp, first published in 1844.
Singers are seated in a "hollow square" and sing four-part harmony
from shape-note scores where triangles, ovals, rectangles, and
diamonds represent the syllables fa, sol, la, and mi - a system
invented around 1800 to teach anyone to sight-sing. No experience is
required to participate in this living tradition - come and be a part
of what the S.F. Chronicle described as "its spareness, rawness and
wild character... like a human pipe organ."
Venue:
Potrero Hill Neighborhood House
953 DeHaro Street at Southern Heights
