Artist, Curator, and Educator Nayland Blake Gives Public Lecture

Over the past 20 years, artist, curator, and educator Nayland Blake's
interests have ranged widely, "from popular culture to vanguard
subversion; from Camp to the queer body in the age of AIDS; from
Sadean and psychoanalytic texts to the toxic legacy of American
racism," critic David Deitcher writes in the catalogue to Blake's
2003 survey exhibition at the Tang Museum at Skidmore College. Blake
has consistently explored notions of identity, albeit, as Deitcher
writes, as "a compound process rather than a fait accompli." Blake's
work has been exhibited internationally. He's represented by Matthew
Marks Gallery, New York; Gallery Paule Anglim, San Francisco; and his
work is included in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum of Art;
Des Moines Art Museum; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; San Francisco
Museum of Modern Art; Whitney Museum of American Art; and University
Art Museum, Berkeley. His writing has been published in Artforum,
Interview, Out, Outlook, and numerous exhibition catalogues. He has
taught at Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts, Bard College, San
Francisco Art Institute, California Institute of the Arts, University
of California at Berkeley, Parsons School of Design, New York
University, School of Visual Arts, and Harvard University School of
Visual and Environmental Studies. He has served as visiting artist at
numerous colleges and universities, including Yale University, the
Museum School, Rhode Island School of Design, Williams College, and
the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Blake is currently
faculty Chair of the ICP-Bard Program in Advanced Photographic
Studies in New York.
