Drums of Earth: Earth-Shake in Spring
Sat, Apr 15
8:00 pm
$30 general/ $20 seniors & students over 10
On Saturday, April 15, 2006 at 8:00 pm, David Auerbach the
Improvisator, performer of ancient instruments in awesome acoustics
of caves and sacred spaces, will commemorate the 1906 San Francisco
Earthquake centennial with a concert of ancient drums entitled "Drums
of Earth: Earth-Shake in Spring" at an historic quake survivor
landmark, the 1889 First Unitarian Universalist Church, 1187 Franklin
St. (corner of Geary), San Francisco. Tickets for the concert are $30
general admission and $20 for seniors and students over 10, and
information is available at www.cavemusic.net or by phoning
(707) 224-4222.
The concert's sounds, on ancient drums, gongs, and bells (plus
melodic dulcimer, psaltery, flute and harp at appropriate moments),
will symbolize the dynamics of change within the underlying earth and
surrounding natural world on the day that transformed San Francisco
and much of Northern California. The tranquility beforehand, the
tremors, cataclysm and aftershocks, the succeeding quiet, chaos of
aftermath and rebirth afterwards, will be represented in an
evocative, improvisational style intended to inspire contemplation of
the power and mystery of nature.
This performance will use music to remind us of the underlying and
ever-changing activity within the earth that was the cause of the
cataclysm and its resultant effects upon the natural world and life.
It will encourage us to use our imagination to envision (in some
cases, to remember) living through such an event and to understand
its lesson about our place in the world and the universe.
David Auerbach has specialized in rare and ancient instruments for
thirty years, and for the past twenty has performed nearly two
hundred cave concerts in the California Wine Country, including
"Carols in the Caves", "Cave of the Spirits" and "Cave of the Drums".
The April 15 show is part of his recently introduced series of
ancient drums in sacred spaces, that has included "Drums of Peace"
and "Drums for the New Year" performances in other century-old churches.
