Residential zones, be they populated by gated communities, landmarks
of modernist architecture, or crumbling ranch houses, are Amir Zaki's
primary subject. He creates photographic images of dwellings, often
from extreme angles, that picture the ordinary in high relief. He
pictures buildings that have been manipulated by contractors or the
artist with the aid of digital tools to raise questions about
architecture and comfort levels. Homes are perched precariously on
hillsides, digitally truncated ranch houses become strange totems,
and bricked-over fireplaces add an ominous tenor to interior space.
Zaki, recipient of a 2005 James D. Phelan Award in Photography, has
had solo exhibitions at Perry Rubenstein Gallery, New York; Roberts
and Tilton Gallery, Los Angeles; MAK Center for Art and Architecture,
Los Angeles; and James Harris Gallery, Seattle. Zaki was included in
The New City: Sub/Urbia in Recent Photography at the Whitney Museum
of American Art. His work is included in collections of the Whitney
Museum of American Art, Henry Art Gallery, and the Orange County
Museum of Art. He earned his MFA from UCLA, and currently serves as
Assistant Professor of Art/Digital Media at the University of
California, Riverside.
