About Bachelorette, 34
Single women have been the current media sweethearts, with mainstream
shows and programs focusing on single women looking for men.
Productions such as Sex in the City and Bridget Jones' Diary have
shown main character women as strong, empowered and happy, yet there
remains an underlying theme of searching for "Mr. Right".
"Bachelorette, 34," takes a thoughtful yet comic look at the dark
side of this pressure to find a partner. Intricately weaving
educational dating videos of the 1950's and 1960's with contemporary
interviews, the film uses the director's relationship with her
marriage-obsessed mother as a way to examine societal pressures
regarding marriage, both how the sexual revolution has changed
contemporary women's options-and how the belief that marriage and
children are every single woman's ultimate goal is still very much
with us.
