A.M. Homes is the author of such iconoclastic works as "Music for
Torching," "The Safety of Objects," and "The End of Alice." Her
novels and short stories are acclaimed for their psychological
realism and fierce emotional intensity. At the heart of her much-
praised and often controversial stories are daring portraits of
suburban life: children's obsessions, the battles between spouses and
neighbors, disturbing motives behind casual encounters. "In A
Country of Mothers" is Homes' novel about the obsessions of a
psychiatrist and patient who both secretly suspect they are mother
and daughter. "This Book Will Save Your Life" is Homes' most recent
novel. The novel is a portrait of Richard Novek, a modern-day
Everyman who is psychologically estranged from everything and
everyone in his life, including himself. Rendered with deft strokes
and provocative turns, Homes depicts transformation and compassion
against the surreal background of Los Angeles. She is also the
author of "The Mistress's Daughter," a memoir, which describes how
Homes' birth parents sought her out in adulthood. She is a
contributing editor of Vanity Fair and frequently publishes in The
New Yorker, Granta, Harper's, McSweeney's, Artforum, and The New York
Times. A.M. Homes is the recipient of Guggenheim and NEA Fellowships.
