Daniel Handler
In conversation with Laura Miller
Daniel Handler is the author of "The Basic Eight" and "Watch Your
Mouth" and, as Lemony Snicket, the outrageously funny and macabre
children's novels collectively known as "A Series of Unfortunate
Events." The mock-gothic serial follows the Baudelaire orphans
through a variety of misfortunes and bad luck. "The Unauthorized
Autobiography of Lemony Snicket" further explores Handler's highly
imaginative world of gloom and literary wit. His most recent novel,
"Adverbs," considers consciousness and desire with the linguistic
deftness, humor, and political jabs that have made him popular with
readers of all ages. As its title suggests, "Adverbs" indicates the
manner, time, place, cause, and degree of the most jubilant and
painful of human emotions: love. A San Francisco native and amateur
accordian player, Handler is an outspoken advocate for free speech
and literacy causes. He is also the screenwriter of "A Series of
Unfortunate Events," "Kill the Poor," and "Rick."
Daniel Handler will visit the Herbst Theatre to be interviewed on
stage by Laura Miller, writer, critic, and co-founder of Salon.com.
