Superheroes and villains

HK Gruber's Frankenstein!! may be like nothing you've heard before.
The Viennese singer/composer/conductor calls the piece a "pan-
demonium," conjuring the neo-goth imagery of a far more frightening
"The Nightmare Before Christmas," with a bumping, creaking score
played partly on toy instruments, and lyrics several degrees quirkier
and more macabre than your average fairy tale. Set to children's
poems by H.C. Artmann, this arty cabaret tale is populated with rats,
cannibals and werewolves, Frankenstein and Dracula, and superheroes
Batman and Robin, John Wayne and Superman. Surprising, bizarre,
funny and slightly mad, Frankenstein!! shows off Gruber's influences-
among them Kurt Weill, pop music and Stravinsky-in equal measure. He
makes a rare U.S. appearance to sing with the San Francisco Symphony
and Resident Conductor Edwin Outwater at Davies Symphony Hall May 10,
12 and 13, with a May 11 concert also scheduled for Flint Center in
Cupertino. The Friday, May 12 concert begins at 6:30 p.m., with
Outwater and San Francisco Symphony musicians demonstrating musical
concepts from the work.
