Animal Insurrection, art exhibit by Michelle Waters
Fri, Apr 7
5pm - 7pm
free
"Animal Insurrection", a solo exhibit of satirical environmental
paintings by Bay Area artist Michelle Waters, will be showing at the
Thoreau Center's Seed Gallery from April 7 through May 31, with an
opening reception on Friday, April 7 from 5pm to 7pm. Gallery hours
are 9am to 5pm Monday through Friday.
Michelle Waters' political and confrontational paintings are
uncompromising in their indictment of our society's greed and avarice
as the source of the environmental crisis. Waters uses sardonic humor
to give voice to animals whose world is being destroyed by
development, greenhouse gas emissions, chemical usage and
overconsumption. Her anthropomorphized animals include grizzly bears
with jackhammers, hawks with monkeywrenches and a mountain lion with
an acetylene torch ready to deconstruct industrial objects such as
freeways, a Hummer dealership, dams, bulldozers and other man-made
inventions. This body of work is influenced by Waters' 20 years as an
environmental activist, the nightmarish imagery of Hieronymous Bosch
and the writings of Edward Abbey.

Thoreau Galleries are located within Thoreau Center for
Sustainability at 1016 Lincoln Boulevard in the Presidio. Enter the
Presidio through the Lombard gate. Once you've entered the Presidio,
proceed to a 3-way stop, and turn right. At the next (4-way) stop
sign, you'll see the Thoreau Center ahead and to your right - the
white complex with twin balconies in front. Don't turn yet - proceed
forward until you reach the parking lot entrance, which requires a
tight, right-hand turn. After parking, you'll see our sign in front
of the far left building, which says, "Building 1016, Thoreau Center
for Sustainability" - our entrance is behind the sign. If the front
lot is full, there is additional parking located behind the Thoreau
Center.
