Gala Opening of GarageGallery

GarageGallery at Embarcadero Automotive will celebrate its opening by
presenting its Inaugural Art Exhibition between April 6-May 15, with
a gala reception on Thursday, April 6, from 5:30pm to 8:00pm. This
exhibition, held in the magnificent brick, industrial, and skylit
Embarcadero Automotive building at 655 Bryant St., is curated by Bram
Goodwin. The exhibit will feature seven accomplished artists in
painting and photography: Doris Boris Berman, Clement Jesch, Liz
Mamorsky, Jock McDonald, Warren Travis, Susan Tuttle and Sharon Wickham.
GarageGallery was created by Peter MacLaird, co-owner of Embarcadero
Automotive, which has sold and repaired SAAB automobiles for 30
years. An avid art collector, Peter has displayed various artists'
work at each of Embarcadero Automotive's previous three facilities.
With the acquisition of the Bryant St. building, he now has the
physical space to launch a full-time gallery, deciding to have
GarageGallery share space with Embarcadero Automotive's Sale's facility.
"The automobile has been one of the 20th century's iconic art forms,"
comments Peter MacLaird. "Auto manufacturers such as Italy's Ferrari,
Germany's Mercedes, America's Cadillac, and Sweden's SAAB developed
unforgettable art, in the form of their automobile designs. From the
wings of the Caddy to the hood of Corvettes to the unusual and
sweeping shape of the SAAB body, auto art has been embedded into our
collective conscience."
When Peter first saw the Bryant Street building's extensive brick
walls, he immediately envisioned large mural black and white
photographs hanging along the wall. Featured in the GarageGallery
permanent collection are the mural photographs of Jock McDonald.
Peter commissioned well-known San Francisco Photographer Jock
McDonald to take photos of all the Embarcadero employees, and then
had them enlarged to mural size. Jock shot the photographs in a
"deconstructive" manner. "Splitting the human form into its component
parts was natural," stated Jock McDonald, "because that is what an
auto is like. A SAAB is the accumulation of its various parts".
These photographic murals were printed by Bram Goodwin and Stuart
Kogod at Rayko Photo Center, San Francisco's premier photography
darkroom, digital, and gallery facility, using Rayko's state-of-the-
art 52" Colex color processor.
To help celebrate GarageGallery's first show, Rayko Photo Center will
also be open for art patrons to view the Rayko facility, including
photographs in its gallery. Rayko Photo Center is located at 428 3rd
St. at Harrison St., just two short blocks from GarageGallery.
"We were thrilled that we could facilitate the printing of Jock
MacDonald's photographs," commented Rayko Photo Center Director Gary
Hesse. "Photography has always been a medium of aesthetic and
technical exploration, and at Rayko we are committed to providing Bay
Area artists and photographers with a stimulating environment in
which to produce their work and exchange ideas. We offer access to
professional facilities for all traditional photographic processes as
well as state-of-the-art digital imaging. Our goal is to foster an
appreciation for contemporary photography, and we welcome the
opportunity to collaborate with other artists and organizations such
as GarageGallery."
Come and meet the artists, have a drink, view the art, sit in a SAAB,
and listen to music on Thursday, April 6, from 5:30-8:00pm at
GarageGallery and Rayko Photo Center. Free parking after 6pm on
Bryant St. and 3rd St., and a SAAB Shuttle will run between
GarageGallery and Rayko Photo Center on the half hour.
