Bios:
Fred Frith: composer, improviser and multi-instrumentalist, has =

situated himself for more than thirty years in the area where rock =

music and new music meet. Co-founder of the British underground band =

Henry Cow (1968-78), he moved to New York in the late seventies and =

came into contact with many of the musicians with whom he's since =

been associated, including, for example, John Zorn, Ikue Mori, Tom =

Cora, Zeena Parkins, and Bob Ostertag.

Fourteen years in New York gave rise to groups like Massacre (with =

Bill Laswell and Fred Maher), Skeleton Crew (with Tom and Zeena), and =

Keep the Dog, a sextet performimg an extensive repertoire of Frith's =

compositions.

In the eighties he began to write for dance, film, and theatre, and =

this in turn has led to his composing for Rova Sax Quartet, Ensemble =

Modern, Asko Ensemble, and a number of other groups, including his =

own critically acclaimed Guitar Quartet. Best known world-wide as an =

improvising guitarist, Frith has also performed in a variety of other =

contexts, playing bass in John Zorn's Naked City, violin in Lars =

Hollmer's Looping Home Orchestra, and guitar on recordings ranging =

from The Residents and Ren=E9 Lussier to Brian Eno and Amy Denio.

Frith is the subject of Nicolas Humbert and Werner Penzels' award- =

winning documentary film Step Across theBorder. He is currently =

Professor of Composition at Mills College in Oakland, California, =

where he lives with photographer Heike Liss and their children Finn =

and Lucia.

Eric Glick Rieman :
SF Bay Area composer/improviser Eric Glick Rieman performs improvised =

and previously structured music in several settings, both solo and in =

groups - most recently Lung Tree (Glick Rieman, Lesli Dalaba, and =

Stuart Dempster, RER Megacorp release 11/05), and the Mills College =

Contemporary Performance Ensemble.

Rieman writes for piano and for ensembles, and his work for the =

prepared and extended Rhodes piano is featured in this performance. =

He manipulates his Rhodes to create otherworldly textures not =

normally associated with the instrument, using mallets, bones, rocks, =

screws, brushes, finger puppets, marbles, and other objects.

He has recorded with Fred Frith, Lesli Dalaba , Carla Kihlstedt , and =

Stuart Dempster, among others. He has performed with Ikue Mori, Sudhu =

Tewari (Normal), Marcos Fernandes, Amy Denio, Matt Ingalls, Wadada =

Leo Smith, JD Parran, Kristin Miltner, and John Ingle (also among =

others.)

"Rieman's instrument looks like a post-apocalyptic Rhodes piano; some =

of its insides are removed and sitting next to it, and it has all =

sorts of foreign objects crammed into it like shrapnel - with =

strategically placed microphones to capture the various sounds of it =

all. hellip The range of colors that he got out of this instrument =

was astonishinghellip"
-Jonathan Russell, Professor of Musicianship, San Francisco =

Conservatory of Music, writing in San Francisco Classical Voice, =

Issue 8/18-25/05

Sudhu Tewari: Sudhu Tewari is an electronic composer, tinkerer and =

improvisor. An early interest in disassembling alarm clocks and =

coffee makers gave rise to electro-acoustic instruments constructed =

with the remains of discarded stereo equipment and big metal kinetic =

sound installations. Tewari is a founding member of CMAU, an =

improvising quartet utilizing homemade instruments, found objects, =

contact microphones and laptops. He joined forces with guitarist =

Fred Frith to form the duo Normal, playing manually & electronically =

manipulated homemades, and also plays with Eric Glick Rieman and his =

modified Rhodes electric piano, and recently formed TOLGA!, a trio of =

"brutal noise heroes" with Cenk Ergun, and Mark Bartscher. Sudhu has =

also been seen masquerading as a modern dancer with
Group A.
