Earthquake: The Chinatown Story
Mon, Apr 3
12 Noon to 4pm
General Admission: $3
The 1906 San Francisco earthquake was a defining moment for Chinese
America. The destruction caused by the quake and fire reshaped
Chinatown itself, and forced community leaders to band together to
keep Chinatown alive. This exhibition tells the story of how a
natural disaster helped herald a new era in Chinese-American history.
Chinese Historical Society of America (CHSA) will showcase several
untold stories of Chinatown quake survivors, such as a young American-
born Chinese who was bayoneted as he attempted to retrieve his
identity documents and birth certificate from his home, a seven year
old girl fleeing the fire with her family from Chinatown, and
Superintendent Carrie Davis' account of evacuating Chinese orphans
from the Oriental Home.
