The celebrated San Francisco Chamber Orchestra is pleased to present
Bernstein Bash, a richly varied salutation to Leonard Bernstein's
remarkable legacy. Audiences will be delighted by wide-ranging
musical selections from Bernstein's significant repertoire. From the
Broadway pit to Carnegie Hall, Bernstein's music covers a wide range
of contemporary styles, but all imbued with the energy and
intelligence of this great man of American music. Although Bernstein
wrote little chamber music, conductor Benjamin Simon has selected
some of Bernstein's best for this concert, including the beautiful
clarinet sonata performed by Bay Area favorites Teddy Abrams
(clarinet) and Sarah Cahill (piano). Two rising young opera stars -
soprano Anja Strauss and baritone Roberto Perlas Gomez - add their
remarkable talents to this eclectic concert, singing a variety of
Bernstein's songs and joining forces in the seldom-heard masterpiece
Arias and Barcarolles in Bright Sheng's chamber orchestra version.
The SFCO's San Francisco and Berkeley concerts are presented free to
the public; however the group's Palo Alto concert is a ticketed event
and sponsored by Stanford University.
