Alan Rath: New Work -- Artist Discussion
Thu, Apr 27

$10 / $5 for di Rosa Preserve Members and students -- reservations
The di Rosa Preserve announces Alan Rath: New Work, which is part of
its ongoing series of temporary exhibitions in their Gatehouse
Gallery. Alan Rath: New Work will feature new and recent electronic
media sculptures by Rath, including the premiere of two new pieces:
"Four Eyes" and "Ostrich Quintet" (both 2006). On the evening of
April 27th, Alan Rath will talk about the development of his work up
through this exhibition and answer questions.
Alan Rath's path to becoming one of the country's most respected and
successful artists working with electronic media and kinetic
sculpture did not follow a predictable trajectory. With childhood
influences ranging from NASA to Jimi Hendrix and a B.S. in Electrical
Engineering from M.I.T., Rath seemed destined for a job in Silicon
Valley instead of an artist's studio in Oakland. Since the early
1980s, however, Rath has gained increasingly wide recognition for his
robotic sculptures that incorporate electronically manipulated images
and moving parts within beautifully handcrafted armatures of
aluminum, steel, glass, and plastic. His work explores the nexus
between art and science in objects with often human-like--and
humorous--characteristics, and has been included in important
exhibitions and collections both nationally and internationally.
Located on 217 scenic acres in the Carneros region of southern Napa
Valley, the di Rosa Preserve: Art & Nature features one of the
largest regional art collections in the country. A gift to the public
from passionate arts patron Rene di Rosa, the non-profit di Rosa
Preserve houses nearly 2,300 works of art in all media by more than
900 San Francisco Bay Area artists. Visitors can experience the
largest private collection of contemporary Bay Area art with a guided
tour of the di Rosa Preserve, offered Tuesdays-Saturdays. The
Gatehouse Gallery houses examples from the collection as well as a
rotating series of exhibitions featuring Bay Area contemporary
artists. The Gatehouse Gallery is open Tuesday through Friday and
with a reserved tour on Saturdays. For more information on how to
