Indie Filmmaking –
how to make it and what to do next
This will be a panel discussion on filmmaking independently and on a
small budget, as well has how to enter the various film festivals,
both domestic and international.
Panelists will include:
Benjamin Morgan is the director of the film “Quality of
Life”, an award-winning, ultra-low-budget feature about two
graffiti writers who get busted and struggle to maintain their
friendship as the cops close in. Filmed entirely in San Francisco,
the film was produced with wide community support from the graffiti
subculture. It premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival
and screened to sold-out festival audiences in Seattle, Stockholm,
Cinequest and San Francisco. It ended its festival run with a Best
Youth Film award at the Stockholm International Film Festival Jr.
He is also the author (with the Quality of Life Team) of Putting the
Pieces Together: The Graffiti Model for Indie Filmmaking. The book
outlines the challenges in making a nearly-no-budget feature film
within the hidden, criminalized world of graffiti writing. The DIY
(Do It Yourself) Film School chapters lay out the steps that other
upcoming filmmakers might take to make their own feature film, using
“QUALITY OF LIFE” as the case study. The hard to find
limited edition book will be available for purchase.
