Dallas Artist Selected for Commemorative 2006 Olympic Artwork
Organizers of the Torino, Italy 2006 Olympic winter games selected
Dallas artist Chris Lattanzio to create a commemorative work of art
to be displayed in the USA House. Artists were asked to capture the
spirit of peace in their Olympic artwork. Lattanzio's "Spirit of the
Downhill Skier" honors the spirit of the games, the athletes and the
host city, Torino. (Visit
www.chrislattanzio.com for downloadable image.)
Lattanzio's signature style, white on white wood sculpted 3-D images,
captured the thrill of the downhill slopes and manifested his idea of
peace.
"My definition of peace for the Olympics is best described by Hafsat
Abiola, a 27 year old human rights and democracy activist from
Nigeria who said, 'Peace comes from being able to contribute the best
that we have, and all that we are, toward creating a world that
supports everyone. But it is also securing the space for others to
contribute the best that they have and all that they are.' My pieces
are white because that is a cool, relaxing color that is best for
reflecting light, bouncing light. The lines guide your eye through
the piece and give your mind a peaceful sensation," said Lattanzio.
Chris Lattanzio now joins revered American artists like John Nieto,
Andy Warhol, and Roy Lichtenstein, past Olympic commemorative
artists. Other artists featured at the 2006 Olympic games include
Peter Max and Jane Seymour.
In this spirit, this event benefits "Home Away from
Homelessness" (www.homeaway.org). Home Away believes every child
deserves the opportunity to experience safe and supportive spaces
that respect and foster her or his strengths, creativity, and
abilities. By joining with homeless and formerly homeless families we
help build confidence by providing educational, social, and
recreational opportunities. A $5 donation is requested at the door.
On February 9th, Nieto Fine Arts will host an Olympic reception to
unveil the 2006 Olympic piece by Chris Lattanzio. Artist will be
present from 6-10 PM.
