On Saturday, February 4th, Oakland-based brass band Blue Bone Express =

and dance troupe Hot Pink Feathers team up once again to bring their =

New Orleans meets Rio best to Cafe Van Kleef. Led by pianist and =

trumpeter Jara Queeto, Blue Bone Express places a raw and timeless =

spin on traditional jazz music. Their music seeks to summon the =

original musical energy that created the birth of jazz in New =

Orleans. They play a varied repertoire of old rags, stomps, and =

shuffles, dipping into black spirituals, blues-brothel hollers, and =

good-time Mardi Gras music, as well as original tunes by Jara Queeto. =

Blue Bone Express inspires wild praise from music aficionados, such =

as underworldrag.blogspot.com proclaiming, "if there's any hope for =

the future of this [traditional jazz] music it's going to come from =

musicians like these."

Hot Pink Feathers is a samba burlesque dance ensemble directed by =

choreographer/dancer Kelly "Kellita" Garton. Founded in 2000, the =

Feathers have graced the stages of favorite Bay Area haunts such as =

Bimbo's, the Odeon, and the Great American Music Hall and performed =

repeatedly at notable festivals and events such as Tease-O-Rama, the =

Miss Exotic World Pageant, and SF's Grand Carnaval. The Feather's =

aesthetic is at the crossroads of carnaval and cabaret. Their =

colorful, latin-flavored bump 'n' grind has made them "leaders on the =

scantily-clad front" according to Theatre Bay Area. Hot Pink =

Feathers earned First Place in Original World Dance at SF's 2005 =

Carnaval Parade. As a duo, Blue Bone and the Feathers took home 5 =

awards from that very event. The last time these 2 groups performed =

together at Van Kleef's, it was for a benefit which raised over $1500 =

for hurricane-displaced artists and musicians.

Arguably Oakland's hippest little dive art bar, Caf=E9 Van Kleef is =

located at 1621 Telegraph Avenue.
