Julie Chang
new paintings,and installation
January 5-February 11,2005 Reception
Friday,January 20,2006,7-9pm
Bucheon is pleased to present the first solo show for San Francisco
based artist Julie Chang. Julie is an MFA candidate at Stanford
University and recipient of the 2004 Murphy Cadogan Award. She
received her BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston
in 1999.
Her large scale multi-paneled, acrylic paintings investigate the
broader issues of race, gender, class and culture; and look
specifically at cultural hybridity, the commodification of Asian
culture in our country, and the nature of identity as an imposed
character.
She draws on personal icons, located in her experience of growing up
in Orange County, and juxtaposes them with images appropriated from
multiple and divergent sources, including ethnic gift cards, t-
shirts, wrapping paper, instructional gimcrack, traditional Chinese
textile design, European wallpaper patterns, and turn of the century
match book covers. Manipulated, layered, and intertwined, they serve
as a metephor for her sense of self, her value in society, and her
perceived identity as imposed by a market driven culture. *
