Rebuilding from the Inside: Aceh, Indonesia: In the Wake of the Tsunami

You are cordially invited to join us for a night of discussion and
opinion, following a short documentary, accompanied by photographs,
about the reality of the victim's lives in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, one
year after the tsunami disaster.

Now one year later, a look at the conditions in the area hit hardest
by the 2004 tsunami: Aceh, Indonesia. Since the 1970's, Aceh had been
isolated from the world by the Indonesian government due to civil
war, rebellion and open political conflict. But the 2004 tsunami
changed everything. This 20 minute documentary looks at the situation
in the capital city of Banda Aceh, 8 months after the tsunami (filmed
in late summer 2005). It tells the story of the reality of the
devastation, and the web of difficulties facing those still in need
of relief aid. The film was produced by a local Acehnese non-
government organization, Forum Bangun Aceh, whose current work is
offering hope to thousands of Acehnese victims and their families.

The film will be presented by its director and script writer, Therese
Condit, artist and photographer Ali Guida, and web developer Stephen
Lee. All three are San Francisco residents who volunteered in Aceh
this past year. They return to tell the story of the Acehnese people,
their enduring struggle, and the beauty that remains.

A photography exhibit on the beauty of the Indonesian people and
their land, by Ali Guida, will be on display. All works will be for
sale and all proceeds will go toward the building of a new orphanage
in Aceh by the Give Light Foundation (www.givelight.org), and toward
the grassroots work of Forum Bangun Aceh (www.fba.or.id).
