Reception Friday, February 3rd 6-10pm
Oakland, California, January 11, 2006 -- 33 GRAND is proud to present
a spine-tingling new show by two of the Bay-area's premiere creature
creators.
Martha Sue Harris's current body of work furthers her exploration of
mutant plant life, this time inspired by the real-life horror of a
poisonous spider bite she endured while designing her installation.
Harris' recent work frequently imagines plant-life that has evolved
monstrous traits, resulting in playful landscapes of chimerical
plants, mosses and microorganisms. In her current twist on natural
history exhibits, she envisions the nighttime world of a spider-like,
carnivorous plant through such diverse media as fabric sculpture,
painting, animation, and sound. While the spectre of her eight-legged
culprit looms large in the show, the emotional underpinnings of her
work remain thoroughly human.
John Casey is obsessed with fictitious human morphology, which he
explores in his sculptures and ink drawings. Prompted by Martha Sue's
arachnid-induced misadventure, Casey focuses his signature creature
making on the world of the spider. Dedicating his work for this show
to that creepy web-spinner, he uses its mystery and power as
inspiration. Considering the many potential results of spider bites,
Casey imagines a hybrid reaction resulting in beings of combined
spider and human origin. Others are morphs of an evolutionary nature.
Whether human or arachnid, each of them is a unique creation.
