For this exhibition "13 Big Western Landscapes" Rudy VanderLans, has
extended his interest in wrestling with the form of landscape
photography. This body of work stems from the VanderLans book "Pages
from an Imaginary Book," in which crude halftone reproductions of his
photographs are used in rendering his shots of the California desert.
This rudimentary form of printing became a vehicle for Rudy in
considering the very nature of how art is consumed in printed form
and how the landscape is photographically glamorized and fetishized.

He states in his essay "All art finds its common quality in the
halftone dots that reproduce ithellip I wasn't sure what the deeper
meaning of this exercise was, but in the process I would raise all
sorts of questions about representation, expectation, mediation,
original, reproduction, and -let's not forget - visual cliches."
