NAME OF LOVE The 5th Annual Musical Tribute honoring Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. at The Oakland Scottish Rite Center - 1547 Lakeside

cultural, civic and soulful celebration is Oakland's only non-
denominational musical tribute to Dr. King - one of the greatest
humanitarians of our time. This year's featured performers include :

Madeline Eastman is an internationally known jazz vocalist &

Reader's Poll "Best Female Jazz Vocalist ". From Japan to Finland,
from SF and NYC nightclubs to the Monterey and Glasgow Jazz
Festivals, an Eastman performance is never less than exhilarating.
She has recorded 5 CD;s.
The Cultural Heritage Choir, lead by Linda Tillery (whose career has
spanned 34 years), also features Rhonda Benin, Elouise Burrell,
Melanie DeMore, Simon Monserra, was formed in 1992 and performs
traditional African-American music including spirituals, work songs,
field hollers, & slave songs. Tillery explains, "this music,
particularly the spirituals, has kept Black people alive through
slavery, night rider's raids, and segregation. In addition to songs
and chants, delivered through such stylistic forms as call-and-
response, multi-layered harmonies, and repetitive verse, the CHC
repertoire includes intoned sermons, folk tales, polyrhythmic
percussion, & dance. They have recorded 5 CD's http://

The Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, with its exquisite vocal
harmonies and stirring gospel repertoire, is a multiracial interfaith
group of 55 vocalists united in their love of gospel music with its
message of hope, joy, unity and justice - under the direction of
Terrance Kelly. From 1999-2003, the OIGC earned the Gospel Academy
Award for "Best Community Choir of the Year." Terrance Kelly received
the 2003 Gospel Academy Award for Best Director. The choir's has
preformed with recording stars Tramaine Hawkins, Take 6,
Linda Rondstadt, Peter Gabriel and Jeffrey Osborne.
The Oakland Children's Community Choir is a project created
specifically for this event. We have commissioned composer Greg Murai
to write two arrangements in the spirit of Dr. King, and engaged
accomplished Music Director and vocalist Michelle Jordan to go into
several Oakland public elementary schools to teach these
compositions. These schools were selected because of the diversity of
the population and the lack of funding for cultural programming. We
will bring these children together to perform as the opening act at
the MLK event. This project provides a number of important services
for underserved children: access to music education, exposure to the
teachings of Dr. King, and an unusual and exciting opportunity to
gain experience performing alongside professional artists and civic
leaders.
