Robert McChesney and John Nichols Speak on new book: Tragedy and Farce
Thu, Nov 10
7:00 PM
$5-$25
John Nichols and Robert McChesney, two of the country's foremost =
media analysts and founders of the national media reform group Free =
Press (www.freepress.net), will discuss problems with the US media =
coverage of the Iraq war and 2004 presidential election. They will be =
joined by Andrea Buffa of Global Exchange (www.globalexchange.org) =
and Paul Jay of Independent World Television (www.IWTnews.com). They =
will be available for interviews via telephone prior to the event
The event is part of Nichols' and McChesney's national tour promoting =
their new book: "Tragedy & Farce: How the American media sell wars, =
spin elections, and destroy democracy." Tragedy & Farce is both an =
expos=E9 and a call to action. Nichols and McChesney take on the =
corporate interests and political strategists that influence the spin =
on news, and often more importantly, the omission of news - such as =
CBS' decision to delay airing of a story on the administration's =
manipulation of intelligence to make the case for war - until after =
the Nov. 2 Election. Documenting the decline in resources and =
standards for political journalism and examining the organized =
campaign by the political right to control the news cycle, Nichols =
and McChesney provide an essential framework by which to judge the =
role played by the media in American democracy. They make a powerful =
case for media reform as one of the most pressing agendas in our =
contemporary democracy.
