HIGH 5 Celebrates the Reopening of the de Young Museum with Five Site-
Specific Outdoor Installations, Oct 7-Nov 7
Giving the new de Young Museum an artsy high five, SFSU, SF Arts
Commission, and SF Botanical Garden at Strybing Arboretum present an
outdoor sculpture festival featuring five temporary sited
commissions. Erected outside the City Hall and in Golden Gate Park
vicinities, the sculptures featured in HIGH 5, on view through
November 7, include a bell tuned to the tonal center pitch of City
Hall by Wang Po Shu, a series of flags relating to the City's geology
by John Roloff, an earthwork by Ann Chamberlain, an enclosure lined
in mirrors by Mildred Howard, and a Chrysler New Yorker stripped and
transformed into a fictitious 1965 DeSoto Conquest by Lewis deSoto.
The project is sponsored by the International Center for the Arts at
San Francisco State University and the SFSU Foundation. "HIGH 5 was
developed as a unique collaboration to extend the celebration of the
de Young Museum's reopening into the City," says curator and SFSU
Fine Arts Gallery Director Mark Johnson. "The works by local artists
of international renown reflect innovative perspectives about the
environment, inspired in part by the museum's unique environmental
design."
