7:00pm-10:00pm
free.
The enchanting 'Divine Dakinis' show is a vivacious collection of
large paintings some 9 ft tall, of various deities from around the
globe, now on display in the Salon of di Pietro Todd at 2239 Fillmore
Street in Pacific Heights.
Dakini is a Tibetan word used to describe enlightened beings, also
known as 'Sky Walkers.' The show is a vibrant depiction of each
deity, in true Tibetan style, with glorious golds, heavenly blues and
royal rubies.
Sharon who has been an Artist living and working in San Francisco for
over 15 years, originally hails from the UK. "Neither of my parents
are English, I've had an eclectic life, always inspired by the exotic
and mysterious. Part of my work as an Artist is to bring awareness to
other cultures, their beliefs and customs."
"The deities portrayed in these 6 large scale painting are my
girlfriends, I see each one of them as an incarnation of these
divinities." There are also 10 small-scale symbolic paintings that
represent some aspect of the mythology each deity, and include, good
fortune, foresight, protection and strength.
Images come from India, Greece, Japan, Ghana, Brazil, Tibet and Haiti.
Also a ceramic Artist, Sharon is currently building an Art Center in
Mozambique with a group of orphaned youth and children. "I met them
on one of my quests, while witnessing a solar eclipse in the north of
Zambezia province. Desperately poor; in need of inspiration and hope
for a future.
Since then Sharon has been using profits from the sale of her artwork
to fund the project in Mozambique, which began in the summer of this
year, and culminated in the construction of the first part of the
school. The BBC world service met with Sharon on the way to
Mozambique this year to interview her about the project known as
"Casa de Paz e Luz".
Sharon's ceramic sculptural work, also inspired by world mythology
will be on display at the de Young Museum when she completes her
residency in January 2006.
